This instructional series from the serra camp. In this set you will be able to be taught by current UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra. The dvds also consist of his brother Nick Serra. Who has brief stints of instruction throughout the set of dvds. The enitre set is 4 dvds each covering a different position.
The Dvds ;
1) Guard
2) Sidemount
3) Mount
4) Back
Each dvd in this set is roughly around 25 minutes long, only a few minutes(3) is taken up by the actually intro. Each dvd consists of 8 or more different basic techniques for each position. One of the things that this dvd can give a novice a complete basic bjj game.
For example when you start the Guard dvd. It will show you a few submissions as well as sweeps, and how to pass the guard when you find yourself in it.
The Sidemount, Mount, and Back dvd is pretty similar as well. These dvds consist of basic submissions and position escapes.
As for the teaching style in this dvd, it’s Matt Serra! Oddly enough his Newyork accent isn’t as noticeable in the dvds. Serra manages to speak loudly but clearly, when he explains. And use’s certain analogys to help give you a better understanding of the techniques. After he shows you the moves twice with him explaining, it will then go into slow motion with no audio. I found another reason why this dvd was good, was the production and quality. It didn’t seem like your average video cam job. Audio and Picture were very clear throughout each one of the dvds.
Overall this is a great set for the beginner, looking to work on his game. It consists most techniques then any beginner needs to start out with. Great for people just getting into bjj, crossing over from another style like judo or wrestling. But if you have been training in BJJ for a bit, you probably won’t be able to pull anything new from this set. My only other complaint is that it doesn’t show any escapes to basic submissions. Though many instructionals don’t, it still would be helpful.
