Street Smarts motorcycle skills is a practical course in two-wheeled street survival. With tips and tactics from experienced street riders and expert road racers, you’ll learn safety techniques you can apply directly to your street riding. These volumes are a valuable resource that will help riders at any level. All are nicely produced, with excellent action footage to demonstrate every important point.
Street Smarts – The Advanced Course in Urban Survival – 1: Strategies and Tactics for the Street
This volume covers rider clothing, street strategies, night riding, braking, counter-steering, and much more. Overall, it shows you how to use your head to keep out of trouble.
(about 53 minutes)
Street Smarts – The Advanced Course in Urban Survival – 2: Lessons from the Track
This volume lets you hear different opinions about how to approach situations such as entering a turn too fast; riding technique for rainy weather; or using your rear brake. Evaluate each answer and incorporate the best of them into your own riding techniques.
(about 45 minutes)
Street Smarts – The Advanced Course in Urban Survival – 3: Danger Zones
This volume shows that knowledge, anticipation, and reflexes are the keys to survival. Whether crossing an intersection, rounding a sharp mountain turn, or lane splitting on the freeway, this will teach you how to anticipate trouble and avoid it.
(about 37 minutes)
But, the time spent on lane splitting, which is illegal in most states, is a bit of a waste. And, the second DVD focuses on the track which is fun to watch and does contain some good info, but I would rather have all three DVDs focus on riding on the street, with more time spent looking at riding on dirt, gravel and other problematic roads/driveways – try riding a loaded Goldwing down a looong rural dirt/gravel driveway and you’ll understand why. I rode bikes and scooters from 49cc to 900cc for decades before getting my Wing, but many middle-aged and older folk are making a big heavy motorcycle their first bike, so time would be well spent on this. Also, would have liked to see more time spent on low speed handling on large, heavy bikes.
There are many books but few DVDs aimed at teaching riding skills. These are well worth buying as a set or individually. Note, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers multi-level classes that give you hands-on riding and text based instruction that is outstanding. I took the beginning class after roughly thirty years of riding and learned there was a lot I didn’t know.
You can never be too safe on a motorcycle. Learn and live.
